In 2005, after graduating from Mount Allison University with a Bachelor of Arts, Beaton made the choice to leave Cape Breton to get a job in the oil fields to help pay off her student loans. The title of the book comes from an incident where hundreds of ducks died in a toxic accident in the oil fields.ĭucks begins with Beaton describing her early life growing up in Cape Breton, an economically depressed region of Canada, with her parents and three sisters. Beaton started working on Ducks as a five-part webcomic that she posted to Tumblr in 2014. Ducks is a coming-of-age story and a memoir of the two years Beaton spent living and working as a woman in the male-dominated oil fields located in in Alberta, Canada. Kate Beaton is a Canadian cartoonist and comic book artist best known for being the creator of the award-winning comic strip Hark! A Vagrant. It is 460-pages long and was published by Jonathan Cape on 15 October 2022.
