This work was produced to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in Great Britain. The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano is also one of the first widely read slave narratives. The book contains an interesting discussion of slavery in West Africa and illustrates how the experience differs from the dehumanising slavery of the Americas. It discusses his time spent in slavery, serving primarily on galleys, documents his attempts at becoming an independent man through his study of the Bible, and his eventual success in gaining his own freedom and in business thereafter. Banking on the popularity gained through the book, Equiano became an activist and worked hard to improve the economic, social and educational conditions in Africa. It led to the creation of a new literary genre that expounded the brutality and inhumanity faced by the slaves. However, unlike other slaves, Equiano did not participate in field work and rather served his masters personally. The experience left a deep impact on the enslaved Equiano, who even lost his identity to his master as he universally became known as Gustavus Vassa rather than Olaudah Equiano. Once a slave himself, Equiano personally experienced the hardship, turmoil, and forbidding treatment meted out to slaves by the Britain’s upper class. He describes how he was kidnapped with his sister at around the age. Olaudah Equiano was a prominent Black activist who worked hard to put an end to slave trade in Britain and its colonies. In his autobiography, Olaudah Equiano writes that he was born in the Eboe province, in the area that is now southern Nigeria.
